"You cannot get it
by doing something about it
;
you cannot get it
by doing nothing about it.
...
Wherever you look for it,
it runs away
;
and if you try to deceive the devil
by pretending to yourself that
you are not looking for it,
you certainly
won't deceive
the Tao."

What makes it so desirable in the first place?

And how does this person know you can't get it through any of these methods? Does he have it? Is he saying these things because he tried all these methods and it didn't happen for him? Isn't that a little vain either way?

I think somebody is missing the point of philosophy.

You can't mock philosophy for being senseless or vain, that's like mocking a puppy for being cute. These are just what philosophy is about. Some people enjoy rambling on senselessly to try and find 'reason' to life, maybe this quest is reason enough, maybe not. That is a philisophical debate, and therefore senseless.
